Algoma Orchards Hosts Durham MP Erin O’Toole’s Agriculture Coffee Drop-In With Local Farmers

w Charles Stevens

Bowmanville, ON – Today, Member of Parliament Erin O’Toole hosted a discussion on agriculture with local farmers at Algoma Orchards in Bowmanville. MP O’Toole spent the morning with agricultural leaders discussing local issues, trade and innovation. Agricultural producers and industry stakeholders offered varying perspectives on issues ranging from expanding markets to Country of Origin Labelling for Beef and regulatory issues.

The Economic Action Plan 2015 outlined many highlights that will positively impact our local Durham farmers such as:

  • The federal government will spend $18.1 million over two years to promote competitiveness and trade opportunities for agricultural products and $12 million in the same time frame to market agricultural and agri-food products.
  • The government has increased the lifetime capital gains exemption for farm owners to $1 million.
  • A reduction in the small business tax rate from 11 percent to nine percent will help some farm operations.
  • There are plans to establish an internal trade office to work to end trade barriers within Canada
  • Introduction of an accelerated capital cost allowance for food processors
  • The federal government will also spend $75 million over five years, beginning this year, to continue to implement the Species At Risk Act.
  • Programs such as Growing Forward 2 and business risk management are just into the third year of their five-year terms and the $3 billion in funding was previously established under federal-provincial agreements.“I appreciate that our local farmers took a couple of hours out of their busy mornings from planting to come out for a chat to discuss the issues that impact them. We have some of the best agricultural producers in the world right here in Durham and some of the best products to sell. I am proud that our government has opened new markets around the world for our livestock and produce farmers while also promoting innovation and value-added processing to maintain the strength of the sector.” – Hon. Erin O’Toole, Member of Parliament – Durham
